Sites, Studies and Resources that Inspire and Inform Shari’s Digital Pedagogy

Facebook

Facebook inspires my digital pedagogy because of its lack of concern about copyright laws. What I mean by this is that my students can utilize any songs, video clips, etc. that they wish without the video being taken down. This is of course in contrast to youtube, where at the drop of a hat your video can be taken down (and thus not accessible to the rest of the class to view). Facebook inspires my pedagogy in that it has shown me the lack of knowledge of two important features of writing: audience awareness and copyright stipulations in the “real world.” These two topics, I think, are two of the most important concepts that I can teach my students, as they may head into careers where copyright laws must be followed to a “T” and audience awareness is crucial.

“Resources for Digital Writing and Digital Teaching”

When reading a good book/textbook, I always want to find out more about the authors. This is the case for Because Digital Writing Matters. While searching for more information about Troy Hicks (one of the authors), I stumbled upon Hicks’ wikispace about teaching with digital writing, titled “Resources for Digital Writing and Digital Teaching.” The link is: http://hickstro.wikispaces.com/. This is a site that I most certainly want to explore, and perhaps after this course (when I have a much greater knowledge of teaching digital writing), join and add to.

Scott Halbritter, aka Dr. Bump

Strange though it may sound, I am citing Dr. Bump, a R &W professor here at MSU, as a Resource that informs and inspires my digital pedagogy. Bump is a wellspring of ideas for teaching digital literacy in the writing classroom. For example, he has his students create two “Remix” videos during the semester, one which is a “taken” project and one that is “allowed to take,” that is, follows all copyright use for use outside of educational settings. I’m not a hundred percent sure if this is his original creation or not, but it certainly shows an attention to the real- world applications of digital literacy that are highly important to my teaching philosophy. Bump is a wellspring of ideas for teaching digital stuff, and he also has any kind of audio equipment you’ll ever need! :)
